ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: DJ CLASS

Our current Artist Spotlight highlight's DJ Class who is one of the heavy hitters in the Baltimore Club Music Movement...When we got the opportunity to sit down with him we couldn't pass it up!!! Luckily Tha Takeover's own E sat down with him and was able to pick his brain and learn a little more about DJ Class...

To give you a little background there is an excerpt from his bio followed by E's Exclusive Interview with DJ Class & Download of his new single "Im The Ish" featuring Jermaine Dupri and Trey Songz

Born Daniel Woodis in Baltimore MD., the name DJ Class is a name that echoes loudly throughout the club music circuit. To some veterans in the music industry, this man, is not only the Club King but one of the best to ever touch the turntables. The Baltimore native has been mixing since the late 90's, when he got his first gig at the "Underground Night Club". At the age of 19 he signed with the top music production company in the Washington, D.C & Baltimore metropolitan area, Unruly Productions. Shortly after being signed, Dj Class began putting his creativity and talent to work. Not only did he begin fostering his production skills but also his ability to write quality music. Which later paid its dues, when he was asked to co-produce the remix for one of hip-hops most revered party tracks "It takes two" by Dj Kool and Fat Man Scoop.

The mentorship he received from Music Executives Shawn Caesar, Scottie B, Kevin Lyles, Jermaine Dupri, Greg Street and Jay Z has helped DJ Class to launch his career and gain the respect of some of the industry's most valuable players. Dj Class the business man started his own label Class Heat Music in 2001. Dj Class has a celebrated repertoire of producing hit songs like, "Tear the Club Up", "Class in Session", and "Back dat Ass Up". Other career accolades include, production placement on the movie soundtracks "Cecil B. Demented", "No Budget" and "Bankable Bitch". Adding to that list is the production credit for Jay Z's "Twenty Bag Shorty", and the theme song for BET's show "Cita's World". Artist, sound engineer, and label owner are just a few of the hats DJ Class wears. He currently does production work for the number one radio station in the southeast, Atlanta's V103.

When looking at your career and the time that you have spent in the game, what would you attribute your longevity to??

Being humble, prepared and knowing self. This industry is for me and I never lost focus on why I'm here.

So being from Baltimore, and experiencing the "B-More" Club Music, how would you describe it to those that aren't familiar with the sound and the movement??

This is the most "high energy ish" you'll hear in the world. If you like to dance, this is party music on steroids.

I know personally working in the music industry it seems that those that are the most passionate about their craft seem to be the most successful…With that being said, who or what influenced you to get professionally involved with music??
wow..... My list starts with Quincy Jones. Jay-z, Dr Dre, Missy Elliott, and Russell Simmons.

They say everyone leaves a legacy, at the end of your career when people look back and say "DJ Class", what do you want them to remember??
I enjoyed entertaining others, and that I was very instrumental in making Baltimore Club a globally recognized genre of music. It's like how crunk music lived and breathed longer than the world recognized. I am hoping that I am able to brighten the eyes of the world to this genre. I want people to also remember DJ Class as being a good person that could speak good into everyone that crossed my path. Always making the impossible, possible.

We took a backslide on our Artist Spotlight so I had to make sure I started the New Year back on track...I got this tip from my home home girl Tiffany so I'm doing this on her behalf.

New Jersey, the Garden State, borders on two meccas of Hip Hop, New York City and Philadelphia and has produced some influential rappers including, Queen Latifah, RedMan and Naughty By Nature. However, New Jersey has a newcomer on the scene that is going to put NJ back on the map, Bizz, "The Prince of Jersey."

Born in Jersey City, NJ, and raised in Bayonne, NJ, Brandon "Bizz" Stokes was bred to be a star. Although he always had a love for hip-hop, Bizz was on the verge of becoming an all-star basketball guard in high school. Basketball runs in the family; he is the brother of the McDonalds All-American, and Villanova shooting guard, Corey Stokes. But after several serious injuries ended his sports career, Bizz turned to music full-time and signed with Blakglobe Records in 2005 and has infiltrated the mix-tape circuit from the east coast, mid-west, down south, and overseas in Germany. Bizz has previously been featured on DJ Flipcyide's compilation album "Slept on Vol. 3" hosted by Paul Wall and various other mixtapes including "We Run NJ" featuring Joe Budden, Sam Scarfo, Ransom, Big Lou and Serius Jones.

In 2006, Blakglobe Records released a compilation album titled "Blaktrilogy" which Bizz was featured throughout. The album was distributed throughout the Northeast, in Tower Records, several mom and pop store and online websites. Bizz's pin - point flow, witty word play, originality and ability to make hit records will set him apart in the game. In December 2007, Blakglobe Records inked a joint venture with Colossal Entertainment, home of former State Property/Rocafella Records artist Omillio Sparks. The album, titled "Serious Bizzness," is set for release in the 1st quarter of '09 and will be distributed through Koch Entertainment. Blakglobe reports that the album's 2 street/buzz singles, "Drop It Down" produced by Slam and "Jersey Swagger" produced by Ill-It Beats is already featured on multiple mixtapes and has several online references. Both singles are available for download on itunes, Cdbaby, Rhapsody and many mp3 sites.

Bizz is steadily perfecting his craft, making appearances among a ton of star athletes and major artists at NBA All-Star weekend in New Orleans, the CIAA tournament in North Carolina, and the Worldwide Core DJ's Retreat in New Orleans. He established a huge following in Ohio, and Pittsburgh by getting "Drop it down" on 106.7 WAMO FM, doing several shows and promoting in his shrink wrapped truck. It's that rare New Jersey sound has earned him major credibility throughout the state, recognition in Scratch Magazine, Rap Fanatic Magazine, http://www.hiphopgame.com/, and several more online sites.

"What sets me apart from every other artist besides my versatility is that I'm not motivated by money and fame. My love, passion, and dedication to making real music are what inspire me to take it to the next level."

His lyrical word play is best described in his lyric to SONG which will be featured on his upcoming solo debut, " BIZZ WILL PROVIDE."

The 2nd single will be "In a Minute" feat. Q-Parker from 112, and is produced by the legendary Bunny Sigler. Bizz and Q. Parker performed it for the 1st time at this past Core Dj's Retreat in South Carolina. It got rave reviews from everyone and the Core Dj's rated it in the top 20 songs at the entire retreat.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: SEARIUS ADD

This weeks Artist Spotlight is my man Searius Add...He's an artist he exemplifies the essence of Hip Hop...Creative flow, meaningful music, and an education!!! With the state of Hip Hop in peril its refreshing to be able to spotlight a true artist...

1. For all those people that been hiding under a rock, let them know who Searius Add is…
I’m just a “fairly” talented and authentic rap artist and spoken word poet. I do a few more things but that’s the foundation. “A college boyz mind with a d-boyz hustle” lol…
2. I have seen you over the years start from doing spoken word and maturing into a hip hop artist. How has that transition influenced your music?
I first started rapping in 6th grade, then I picked up spoken word in college. Most people knew me as a spoken word artist first because when I hit college I never performed as a rap artist- “everybody” started rapping and didn’t want to be affiliated with it. I released my first mixtape in 2004 and since then rap has been my business. Rap is my main priority but I do them both; it keeps me balanced.
3. Your music is meaningful and often tells a story, with the state of hip hop leaning towards the more meaningless party songs, how do you maintain as an artist without going mainstream to make a quick “buck”?
The hallmark of a true artist is the ability to make commercially viable music while still remaining true to yourself. I’m interested in making timeless music, not timely music; meaning, I set trends not follow them. At the same time I don’t knock anyone else’s hustle or what they do, and I do realize there’s a season for everything. Artists try too hard at making everyone like them. I work at making the best product I can, market it as creatively and thoroughly as I can… and the rest takes care of itself. That’s been my formula and people love my approach.
4. Ok…So I’ve seen you on the Rap Battle scene and I must say you have out shined quite a few rappers to say the least, where do you get your inspiration to battle rap? And how do you separate the rap battle verses from your studio music?
LOL… good lookin, bro. When I’m battling my aim is to destroy you; flat out humiliate you in the worst way. From ya outfit to ya momma, whatever it takes… They are really two different worlds. Battling is sport to me but its too one-dimensional. You only can talk about another person so much. After awhile it gets corny to me. Making good music is an art, a talent, a craft…
5. So last but not least, What can people expect from Serius Add in the future as far as upcoming shows, collabs, tours etc?….And how can people contact you?
Sheesh! I had a tour scheduled to kick off in October nationally but I had to push things back a little bit because I have TWO companies that are set to launch this year: “Gold Bars” (my entertainment umbrella) and “Back Pack Developments” (my non-profit). Got some realllly big things planned that I have to keep under wraps now (especially considering how niggaz love to BITE, lol) but as the days approach I’ll most definitely keep you posted sir. Me and DJ Mr King are going to do a mixtape before years end and the album is coming at the top of ’09. I’ve been working diligently behind the scenes on a few different business ventures so aside from the mixtape with King Im tryna stay out the way… because in ’09 it’s a wrap! ;) The quiet before the storm sir. So this weeks Artist Spotlight we caught up with my girl Mz. Skittlez...She's a grinder and a talented women with a lot of personality!!! Mz. Skittlez is an very deep artist and person and we were thrilled to get a chance to sit down and chat with her...If you don't know who she is see who's got the "Buckeye State" in a frenzy

1. For all of the people that don't know, let them know who Mz. Skittlez is…

Mz. Skittlez is unique a hype version of the average female. I am a full time student and entertainer. I am in class in the morning, at an autograph signing by night and on tour on the weekends! Lol! I am a futuristic type of girl wearing whatever "I Like" even though my management "Hates it!" I'm determined not to stop no matter what obstacle I have to go through! I am the new female phenom of music and number one female artist from Cleveland, Ohio currently! If you dont believe me just google my name Mz Skittlez, and see first hand.
2. Looking at your music and your approach to the game, how do you feel about the Midwest movement in Hip Hop?

I love it and I support it to the fullest. I feel like I'm doing things that million of female artist in everywhere would love to do! As an independent artist I have been on tour with numerous major artist, BET Spring Bling, won many awards, and most of all I am constantly giving back to my community! The Midwest movement which at one time we called the "Cap Movement" is going to expand slowly but surely! We all are destined for success! It is very hard but I put on for my city, and I also stand behind artist such as chip, fat al, pooh gutta and many others that are doing their thang! (smiles) This industry is hungry for this new movement.
3. With the disparity of women influence in Hip Hop, who do you use as inspiration to make music?

And how do you feel you "fit in" within the Music Industry?? My family and women that don't have the opportunity to voice their opinions! My family because I have lost very important people that were extremely close to me but every day I wake up knowing that they are behind me pushing me to go on! In my short life time I have lost close friends and family, including my best friend and sister. They make realize life is too short to stop! Females because all my songs are basically about life through a females perspective of course lol! But many females can't voice their opinions or rage about certain things. So it is my job to do it for them! Music is a universal language! As far as fitting in the music industry I believe that I am making my own path into this industry with my unique dare to be different style. This music industry is hard enough to make it in too, and a thousand times hard if your a female artist.
4.I know you've been putting in work and grinding shows….What's a typical week like for Mz. Skittlez?

WOW!! I don't think we have enough time, just kidding! I go to class, study because education is first and then on a weekly average I do about 4 shows, 3 appearances or autograph signing, 3 radio station interviews or call ins, and squeezing in the studio. Im also between time checking my myspace www.myspace/lilskittlesclevelandsfinest and facebook, Calling my fans back on my hotline 216-503-6830. And settling arguments between my designers and management about upcoming outfits for shows and tours Lol! Trust me I don't know how I do it! But I do have a strong management team to help and support me along the way.
5.So last but not least, What can people expect from Mz. Skittlez in the future as far as upcoming shows, collabs, tours etc?….And how can people contact you?

Well you can expect a lot of new stuff far as versatility! I'm slightly changing my style but at the same time keeping it me!
